FIRST IMPRESSIONS

As we laid down our battle plans for a trip to our certain friends and relatives the reactions were more or less skeptical. The promised accommodation is going to be some barn that the host’s ancestors build in the late seventeen-hundreds or has probably some mold issues and has one-layered-glass used in windows which come to winter ends up freezing the whole house. On top of that if someone comes to your house to work and live for few weeks what kind of work do you ask them to do? Labor of course! All the shitty stuff you were supposed to do yourself last year, month or decade but were too tired, too busy or too drunk to do it yourself. That is what we were prepared to do and what we are doing, right? Well not exactly…

This is our…well we are not sure what to call this but for three weeks it’s our home. It’s huge in size plus we have ourselves our own bedroom, bathroom, toilet and living room in distinct ”wing” of the building. It’s really hard to describe what everything looks like so we decided to summarize it as modern, peaceful and elegant and post a video that summarizes everything up.

This is our supervisor Carla. She’s bit of a bitch. Literally. She’s a one-year-old jack russels and wire fox terrier who loves everybody, likes scratches and gets off by chasing bunnies.

And this is our office. And backyard. And front yard. All spiced up with bright autumn colors <3

And what about the work…? It’s not THAT bad come to think of it. Some people do it on their spare time, are actually aching for it, especially in the springtime in Finland and some does not understand how someone could ever care about something like that. And this is what we do…

Ok so we are living with somebody else’s house. In this case in a gorgeous house of lovely British lady, her cute puppy and muscular, though minor, demigod of a son. And we have to work to earn our keep. Yeah if you call picking weeds, mulching and picking berries in a sunny garden surrounded by famous mountain ranges a work. So as we reviewed our situation with a glass of local Pinot Noir we decided that our life in Queenstown was not THAT bad. Even though we still lack a working Wi-Fi, next accommodation site near Christchurch, an actual company who hasn’t closed for the winter season and the actual text for the Bachelor’s Thesis we are feeling pretty awesome.

OUR ENCHILADA OF FREEDOM

Today was the day. And when I say the day I mean our first day of work and the day of tough decisions. We had consulted a local car-hiring firm upon our arrival in Queenstown to determine how much would it cost to hire a car for a month so we could go and explore (read: seek and destroy) the tourist destinations and the awesome sceneries of the south island of New Zealand. As you may guess we walked out with a piece of paper and mind blowing confusion between prices containing full insurance or containing no insurance at all. However a car was booked to be retrieved from the Apex of Queenstown the next day at noon.  After a long conversation and pondering we decided to pay a little extra and make sure that if the driving on the wrong side of the road would turn out to be too overwhelming for some Asian tourists we wouldn’t be liable to pay when they will smash their Daihatsu to our new family member. The idea seemed bullet proof until we arrived to the rental firm and Lotta realized that she would actually have to drive the car from Apex to our new home through a route that contained three or more roundabouts. Reaction was a hysterical laughter seizure that can be seen on this video:

After a small shopping spree, few heart attacks and using the wipers instead of signal we survived to the highway that took us home. And low and behold here he is equipped with modern radio with C-tape slot and virtually no air conditioning, our enchilada of freedom.

This little bugger is supposed to take us to infinity and beyond (or maybe just to Christchurch and the nearby areas) as safely as we can drive him (which from this experience is a very vague concept). However, after a few practice rounds we are confident we’ll get him purring like a kitty cat; so good luck to us and Godspeed!

JOURNEY TO THE DESTINATION

The actual journey to our first destination, which was Queenstown, took roughly about two and a half day. Because of it’s too exhausting and impossible to depict the rate of deteriation in us, the general state of jetlag and the mishaps that happened or almost happened we decided a video would be the most effective way to convey these feelings along the way to you our awesome followers. Unfortunately we had troubles on deciding what language (as we would like to think ourselves almost bi-lingual) we would speak on the videos and finally as the first catastrophe and total state of vitutus (see dictionary) settled in we decided that all the videos would be posted in Finnish. But despair not our dear friends! We also decided to make a small summary after each video so you, our English speaking followers could understand what is going on in these videos where it seems it’s either Miia or Lotta is rambling, googling or grimacing randomly babbling a language that hardly no-one understands.

So here it is our journey step by step.

1. At Helsinki-Vantaa Airport

Miia is excided about the journey, Lotta not that much as her leather jacket (which cost 275 euros and has been worn for less that 8 months) brakes down. But as always when facing a trouble the two heroines enjoy glasses of cider to calm their nerves.

2. Hong Kong

We are having a small camp in the Hong Kong International Airport without any clue where we should be when the boarding starts. We have just visited one “local” nutrition provider and consider visiting another before searching the right gate. At the gate Miia analyses the trip so far and reveals that Lotta almost lost her passport and jacket during the transition in Hong Kong.

3. Auckland

We have arrived in Auckland and are waiting to be transported to the hostel. This however once again requires waiting around. In Mengere, Auckland we once again wait, this time for a bus, before we start exploring the city center where we abide our time until we have found almost all our required objects and the bus arrives to take us to the hostel.

PROLOGUE

So here we finally are..sitting in the Hong Kong International Airport after a 9-hour flight waiting for to aboard a next 10-hour-flight to our final destination: New Zealand. As all great ideas the idea for this adventure arrived to two young women, after few pints of ale and spurring from a half-hearted pitch. The result: a 17 096km journey from Tampere, Finland to New Zealand, one Bachelor’s Thesis topic and tons of enthusiasm (perharps more of that than the actual skill!). This blog is the tale of our adventure, our research and our struggles half way around world where anything and everything is possible! We welcome you to enjoy of our blog, pictures and videos and have a great time laughing and crying to our mishaps!
